About the Artist
Although Sarange is not from the Tinga Tinga family he was introduced to TACS [Tinga Tinga Arts Co-operative Society ]by Mr. Kibiri.
His teacher and influence is Mr. Mocha - Sarange inspiration for his painting comes from Karatu, a Masai village close to Ngorongoro and at the heart of Africa's Great Rift Valley. He lives in Kigamboni, along the South Beach of Dar es Salaam and across the bay from the main part of the city, he is married with two children.
Instead of the normal static masai figures you find in many paintings Sarange breathes life into his paintings with movement. Often the Masai in the paintings are depicted going about their daily tasks; for example carrying of
wood or getting water (wanachota maji) etc.
Tinga Tinga community
The Tinga Tinga movement was disorganized until Mr. Salum Mussa (Mzee Lumumba) started to organize the Tingatinga Partnership. Under the umbrella of the Tingatinga Partnership the organization grew until, in 1990 the movement reformed into a stronger organization - The Tingatinga Arts Co-operative Society which now has almost 100 artists at the center in North Dar es Salaam. It is the official and by far the best organized Tinga Tinga group, and includes the core of the Tinga Tinga family, thereby giving added provenance to the work produced here. Part of the ethos of the centre is to teach artists who can then goon to become recognized as master artists in their work - artists such as David Mzuguno, Peter Martin, Damian Msagula, Noel Kapanda all came through TACS
