Kandede says of his inspiration to become an artist:- “. . .working as an artist since I was a little boy during my early school days. I used to join my grandpa when I came back from school so that I could work with him in making art. My grandfather was a notable artist –a sculptor who inspired me with his art works, from there I began to learn the skills of art and sculpture, this training being a part of my culture, because I come from the Makonde tribe –sculpture to the Makonde is their longtime tradition. . .”

Bagamoyo is an historical town and part of Kandede's passion is the histroy of art. In his researching of art in the area of Bagamoyo Kandede discovered the technique of painting by using dust mainly from the Ebony tree. Kandede uses this technique [using stainable materials] in many of his apaintings.
