About the Artist

About M Ausy :- born in 1977 and studied art at the Nyumba ya Sanaa [House of Arts] from 1995 to 1997. Mmadi Ausy remains on the island of Zanzibar and has a gallery in the Old Fort, next to the House of Wonders along the ocean road. The artists in Stone Town tend to support one another and the galleries along the labyrinth of narrow streets of the old town will stock some of Ausy's paintings. Ausy's gallery in the Old Fort is part of a thriving group of galleries around the internal court yard of the ancient fort. His gallery is full of paintings by many artists and this gallery differs from most as the art is not touristy and the work truly original.

About the Work

His paintings reflect the melding of diverse cultures across the centuries that gives Zanzibar the exotic reputation it deserves. Ausy also paints in watercolors and soft pastels and this is unusual in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. His paintings are usually small up to A3 size but usually smaller. They look fantastic framed and are easy to transport home because of the small size. M. Ausy is a gentleman and knowledgeable about his trade - he can advise you about art history of the Island. His work is varied from Zanzibar doors and the streets of Stone Town to portraits and ultra modern abstract art.
