Tanzania's most well-known style of painting was begun by Edward Saidi Tingatinga. In the mid 1950’s Edward, a self taught artist began to paint to earn additional income.  By the 1960’s his wife sold his paintings near Morogoro Stores, Dar es Salaam.

As his success grew, Edward began to attract a small circle of students learning to imitate his style. Tragically in 1972, Edward was mistaken for an escaping thief and fatally shot by the police. Following his death, Tingatinga's students organized themselves into the Tinga Tinga Arts Cooperative Society Tinga Tinga art is popular in Japan,Sweden,Denmark,Germany,Switzerland and increasingly becoming popular in the USA and the UK.
